Improving Your Posture at Work

Do you spend a lot of time in front of a computer at work and/or at home? This may be necessary to boost your career, but it can encourage poor posture and lead to neck or back pain. Our professional chiropractic treatments at Northgate Chiropractic Clinic in Rochester, MN, are designed to improve your posture naturally.

Shift Your Posture

Bad posture is one of the main reasons you may be experiencing neck or back pain during or after a long workday. However, good posture can go a long way towards preventing discomfort. If you sit at a desk, try to keep your feet flat on the floor without crossing your legs. Your head should be in a neutral position with your eyes looking straight ahead.

You should also try to avoid angling your head up or down, as this can place excess stress on your neck. If you can, keep your lower back straight. A rounded back can contribute to spinal misalignments, which in turn can exacerbate neck or back pain.

Switch Up Your Work Area

Enhancing the ergonomics of your workstation will make a huge impact on your posture. Your computer screen should be directly in front of you, and you should be able to look at the screen straight ahead. Simply raising your monitor can reduce eye strain and prevent neck pain. Your arms should also be parallel to the ground as you type, while your wrists remain in a neutral position.

If you’re having trouble sitting all day, you may wish to invest in a standing desk or an adjustable desk that allows you to switch between sitting and standing. If you’re not able to do so, try to take frequent breaks, get up, and move around throughout your day to stretch and get your blood flowing.
