How To Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer Desk

When you sit at a computer desk all day, added pressure is put on the delicate structures of your neck. Over time, this can cause neck stiffness, pain, loss of range of motion, and can even affect your shoulders and arms. Our chiropractors can offer posture correction and workplace ergonomic techniques that will help you prevent neck pain in Rochester.

Maintain Proper Posture

Poor posture can affect your entire body, leading to chronic pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, and loss of range of motion in your neck, shoulders, and lower back. While sitting at your computer desk, your feet should be flat on the floor and your back should be fully pressed against the back of your chair. Your thighs should be slightly tilted downwards, and your head should be in a neutral position straight above your shoulders.

Adjust Your Computer Monitor and Keyboard

Your computer monitor should be directly in front of you at eye level. Use a monitor stand to adjust the height of your computer monitor. A monitor that is too low will force you to turn your head downwards to use it, placing added pressure on your neck and shoulder. Your keyboard should be close enough to you that your elbows are bent at 90 degrees while you type. Improper keyboard placement may cause you to hunch your shoulders, increasing your risk of neck pain.

Use a Sit/Stand Desk

A sit/stand desk is one that can be adjusted throughout the day so that you can work while sitting down or standing up. Alternating between the two can prompt you to adjust your posture and take pressure off your neck and lower back. You should also get up and stretch regularly, and move around, when possible, to avoid stiffness and muscle spasms.
